Here’s an excellent example of a ’55 Custom station wagon by Mercury that’s been refinished in its original colors of Sea Isle Green Metallic and Springdale Green.
What’s not to like about a beautiful fifties station wagon that looks like it has just rolled off of the production line?
Designed for eight adults these wagons could also carry around 1,000 pounds of bulky items in the back.
With the seats folded down you could even place 4 foot by 8 foot sheets of plywood in the back.
Mercury offered two wagons in ’55 – this and the Monterey with the latter featuring fake wood trim on the sides.
Inside, the interior is done in Green Square Chromatex – only the front seat has been redone using original materials, the rest is original. These bold and colorful materials were just part of a huge selection available for 1955 and the greatest selection Mercury had yet offered for their cars.
So, what’s that in the center there? We’re glad you asked! It’s a NOS (New Old Stock) Travel-Aire swamp cooler – an evaporative cooler that is completely self-contained and simply runs off of the car’s electrical system.
Under the hood, Mercurys enjoyed the Super-Torque 292 V8 outputting 188 horsepower, a brand new engine for ’55, as standard.
This was paired with a 3-speed manual transmission. However, this wagon was purchased with a Merc-O-Matic drive automatic transmission with the original owner paying an additional $190 on the purchase price.
Other options on this car include power steering ($108), power brakes ($45) and even a powered seat.
If you wanted a Custom Wagon during the 1955 model year, prices started at $2,686. Mercury sold 14,134 of them that year.
