This is a true, numbers matching 1968 Chevrolet Impala SS427 Custom Coupe in Matador Red.
Rather than a separate series, in 1968 the SS was once again returned to an optional equipment package.
The Custom Coupe had a formal roofline and was new for 1968. There was also a Sport Coupe available with a sloping roofline.
Continuing with the tradition, Impala still had triple taillights on each side rather than a dual configuration found in the Biscayne and Bel Air.
The SS package included all-vinyl bucket seats and center console. It also included Console shift, SS wheel covers and various body and interior trim.
Primary competition for the Impala would have been from cars like Dodge's Polara, the Plymouth Fury and Ford's Custom, Galaxie and LTD.
Power comes from a 427 cubic inch Turbo-Jet big block V8 producing 385 horsepower and it mounted to a 3-speed Turbo-Hydra- automatic transmission.
All full-size Chevrolets had a wheelbase of 119", overall length of 214.7" and 79.6" wide.
Chevrolet made 710,900 Impalas for the 1968 model year but only 1,778 cars in this configuration. Impala was actually their best selling full-size car for this year. The 2-door Custom Coupe had a base price of $3,021.
This car has the optional 427 cubic inch Turbo-Jet and Turbo Hydramatic transmission at $290 with the SS package costing $179.05 and was built in the St. Louis, MO assembly plant.
