1962 Chevy Impala Sport Coupe SS 409

Impala was top-of-the-line for the 1962 Chevrolet. Throw in an SS package and big block V8 and you have a very collectable car. This stunning Impala Sport Coupe looks really striking with its Roman Red paint and matching red interior.

This car has been the subject of a meticulous frame-off restoration and is all the more special as it came with a 409 cubic inch V8 from the factory. It’s highlighted with a special emblem mounted on the front fenders to show off Chevrolet’s biggest engine available that year. Just think of the Beach Boys’ hit single that referred to this very engine.

At the rear we can see the giveaway signs that it’s an Impala with its six taillights – lesser full-size Chevy models had dual lights each side. In addition, the silver anodized panel that surrounds them is Impala only. In addition, the SS models featured a swirl pattern that was also seen on the body side moldings.

When we look at the side view we can see the roofline of the Sport Coupe is designed to look like a convertible top.

Inside there’s a really beautiful and luxurious looking red vinyl interior which was plusher than the Biscayne or Bel Air. The front seats also had aluminum end panels which were a feature unique to the Impala.

A total of 323,427 Sport Coupes were produced for the 1962 model year. However, this figure covers the body style only and includes the Bel Air cars.

The Super Sport package was only available on the sport coupe and convertible and was an additional $53.80 plus $102.25 for the bucket seats with 99,311 sales being made.

Note: The VIN on a ’62 does not distinguish between a SS and a non-SS cars. The way to identify an Super Sport is by the trim tag. If it reveals bucket seats then it is an SS car as they weren’t available on non-SS cars.

If you wanted to buy a 1962 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe back then it would have set you back $2,669 for the base six cylinder and $2,776 for the 283 cubic inch V8.

The 409 was available in 2 versions, a single quad carburetor version rated at 380 horsepower or a dual-quad version that is fitted to this Impala with solid lifters and high-lift cam rated at 409 horsepower.

They weren’t cheap either! Original buyers were looking at adding $616 for the single carburetor version hooked up to a 4-speed manual transmission and $672 for more powerful dual-quad.

Add in the SS package and a car like this was going to cost a chunk of extra change. The amount of SS equipped Impalas made with the more powerful of the two 409s is likely to be a very small number, making this a highly desirable car.
